VBS UK Training Areas evaluation: familiarisation before the visit
A proposed VBS UK Training Areas demonstration assessing terrain detail, recognisable features and instructor requirements for familiarisation.
This proposed demonstration uses a familiarisation lesson at an agreed UK training location. It is an illustrative evaluation for instructors and simulation owners, with approved terrain references and fictional exercise activity. It is not an account of a completed customer deployment.
Give the terrain a clear teaching purpose
An instructor wants participants to understand the layout of a training area before attending an organised session there. The lesson covers recognisable landforms, facilities and agreed access routes. The instructor names the features students should be able to identify and the questions the classroom exercise should answer.
The first discussion confirms which current VBS UK Training Areas package covers the location and what that package includes. AIC and the customer agree the demonstration boundary, VBS environment and permitted reference material. This keeps the assessment tied to a specific terrain release and a useful lesson.
Inspect the detail behind the scene
AIC’s training-area content combines a 2 metre digital terrain model, imagery at 0.5 metres per pixel, updated vector information and topographic reference data. Handcrafted refinement addresses features where automated generation alone is insufficient. The evaluation should examine the resulting scene against the instructor’s requirements.
Choose several representative viewpoints and compare the terrain form, routes, structures and boundaries that matter to the lesson. Keep the source dates and known limitations with that comparison. The published data resolutions describe the construction of the terrain; the customer still needs to assess the specific features used in the exercise.
Ask the instructor to explain which details help participants recognise the location and which would need further refinement. Record those observations alongside the package version. That creates a clear list for a follow-up discussion rather than a general judgement that the scene looks realistic.
Run a lesson with the intended participants
Use a short, fictional familiarisation activity. Participants locate agreed landmarks, describe the relationship between parts of the training area and follow the instructor’s planned sequence. The exercise should stay within the supplied content and avoid assumptions about features that have not been checked.
Observe whether the required geography is understandable from the viewpoints and display settings used in the classroom. Include a participant who has not helped prepare the scene. Their questions can show where the lesson requires additional explanation, a better viewpoint or different supporting material.
Where the lesson begins with wider geographic context, consider the VBS UK Dataset alongside the local insert. Agree how the content will be used together and check that the selected packages support the proposed scenario. The national and local terrain should each serve a defined learning requirement.
Check the customer deployment
Training-area packages are licensed VBS content delivered into the customer’s approved simulation environment. They have no mandatory external runtime or AIC-hosted service dependency. Confirm compatibility, installation, storage and distribution arrangements with the simulation owner before assessing the normal training rollout.
Run the demonstration on representative classroom hardware and record the settings. Inspect loading and responsiveness during the actual lesson sequence. Any performance conclusion should state those conditions. The customer also retains responsibility for access controls and the handling of the delivered content within its training estate.
Turn the demonstration into an acceptance record
The closing review should identify the lesson objectives supported by the package, the features inspected and any refinement still required. Keep the reference material, terrain version and instructor observations together so a later update can be assessed against the same requirement.
Compare the proposed licence and delivery scope with the work of producing equivalent location-specific content. Include any agreed refinement and support in that comparison. AIC can discuss the cost once the area, fidelity and training use are defined.
