Explore detailed UK training-area terrain for VBS rehearsal and familiarisation, with 2 metre ground data and 0.5 metre imagery. Book an AIC demo.

Location-specific training depends on details that a generic landscape may not reproduce. Ground form, roads, tracks and recognisable features affect how participants understand a place. When an exercise is intended to prepare people for a known training area, the terrain needs to be assessed against that location and the lesson being taught.

AIC VBS UK Training Areas provides detailed terrain inserts for principal UK military training areas. Customer demonstrations are available now. A useful session starts with the area, VBS environment and training objective you want to assess.

What the terrain packages contain

Each package combines topographic mapping, a 2 metre digital terrain model, imagery at 0.5 metre per pixel and updated vector data. Handcrafted refinement is applied where automated source conversion alone does not provide the required training value.

The digital terrain model represents ground form. Imagery supplies visual reference, while vectors contribute roads, tracks, structures, boundaries and other features. Inspect the features required by the lesson together with their source dates and known limitations. Their representation in the simulator determines whether the content fits the exercise.

The packages are designed to support rehearsal, familiarisation and exercise design around recognisable locations. Before choosing content, identify the features participants must be able to interpret and the level of correspondence with the real location that the training requires. That gives the demonstration something concrete to prove.

Match detail to the lesson

An intelligence training team may need participants to describe a location accurately, interpret terrain information or assess a report against its geographic context. The exercise designer should state which of those activities the synthetic environment supports and what evidence an instructor will use to assess performance.

That leads to specific terrain checks. Are the relevant routes recognisable? Does the ground form support the intended interpretation? Are the landmarks used in the exercise present and suitable? These questions connect the terrain specification to the training outcome without assuming that greater visual detail automatically creates better learning.

The same approach helps visiting and allied teams familiarise themselves with a UK training location. Synthetic rehearsal can support that preparation, while current instructions, access arrangements and real-world site information remain matters for the responsible training organisation.

Combine national context with detailed areas

The training-area inserts complement AIC VBS UK Dataset, which provides national terrain at three fidelity levels. The wider dataset can establish the geographic setting while a selected insert supplies greater detail where the exercise requires it.

Ask AIC to demonstrate the combination proposed for your estate. Confirm the training areas currently included, the extent of each package and the relevant VBS compatibility. Source resolution and package coverage answer different questions, and both belong in the procurement scope.

The guide to choosing VBS UK Dataset fidelity explains the national tiers and the hardware trade-offs to test. Planning national and local content together helps avoid paying for detail in areas the exercise never uses.

Keep the package under your training controls

AIC supplies the terrain as licensed VBS content for the customerโ€™s approved simulation environment. The training-area packages do not require an AIC-hosted runtime service. They can be used in local installations, classroom or collective training networks and managed training estates under the agreed licence.

Handling, storage, access and distribution controls remain aligned with that environment. A procurement discussion should cover which installations may use the content, how updates will be delivered and how the team will record the package version used in an exercise. Those arrangements matter as much as the initial installation.

For a disconnected training network, agree the approved delivery route and the checks required before the package enters it. Record the permitted distribution, terrain version and handling arrangements with the exercise configuration.

Review terrain with an instructor and an engineer

Choose a representative training activity and inspect the relevant area in the intended VBS configuration. The instructor should assess whether the terrain supports the lesson. The engineer should assess loading behaviour, storage and runtime performance with the scenario and participant configuration that will actually be used.

Keep a record of required features, observed differences and any additional refinement needed. If a feature is important to the exercise, ask how it is represented and which source or review supports it. Agree how issues identified during evaluation will be addressed before the package is accepted for that purpose.

The VBS UK Training Areas evaluation sets out an illustrative review with an instructor and simulation owner. Use it to agree the terrain references, required features and observations that will determine acceptance.

Scope the surrounding exercise work

A terrain package is one part of a usable exercise. Scenario design, models, participant roles and technical performance also need attention. AICโ€™s VANGUARD simulation work covers VBS consulting, terrain generation, scenario engineering and optimisation. SYNAPSE provides a gateway where external software or hardware needs to interact with VBS4.

Compare the cost of a prepared package and any agreed refinement with the work required to generate, inspect and maintain equivalent terrain for your own programme. Include the hardware and instructor preparation the selected content requires. The useful saving is work you can avoid while still meeting the training objective.

For the wider portfolio, read the AIC intelligence and mission-software guide. To inspect the terrain itself, arrange a customer demonstration with your required training area, VBS version, hardware and exercise purpose.
